A word of caution: This is NOT a 7200 rpm drive: it is 5400. Even more confusing, the box the drive is shipped in has the part number for the 7200 RPM drive, but the advertisement sticker on the box face lists it as 5400.

Ignore the “7K” designator. It is actually a “5K” unit.

Well, I just got mine from ANTOnline thru Amazon, expecting a 7200rpm drive, and what I got was a *5400* rpm drive. I’m really upset about this.

And by the way, I did opened the packaging to verify the drive itself, and indeed it clearly states it is is a 5400rpm drive.

Worst of all is that ANTOnline expects *me* to pay shipping to return it, and then wait up to month for a refund, even though in the product description at amazon it says it is a 7200rpm drive, and thus it is *their* mistake, not mine.

Do NOT buy this drive if you’re expecting a 7200rpm drive, and definitely DO NOT buy it from ANTOnline!!!

  3. I got this drive because I was running out of room on my 320 GB MacBook drive (which a year earlier had replaced the 160 GB drive that came with the laptop). It was super easy to swap the drives (did it myself as it would cost over $50 for the shop to do the 5 minutes of work), as well as transfer the data. And once installed, I don’t have to do anything. The only reason I’m giving this 4 stars rather than 5 is because I haven’t had it long enough to pass the longevity test.

Got this in Jan 2010 and in May my Macbook Pro stopped booting; Apple logo never goes away and wait wheel keeps rotating after flashing broken folder and no entry icons during boot time. Took it to Apple store and they said HDD has bad sectors; I was also suspecting the same. So, 1 star to the product.

Then sent a mail to Amazon asking what should I do and after 30 minutes got a mail saying “Sorry about that and we have placed a replacement order without any charge. You will be receiving your new HDD – same model same company same capacity within 2-3 days”. How wonderful is that?

    So,

    1 STAR to the product

50 STARS to Amazon’s superb return/replacement policy. (I know Hitachi has warranty and all that stuff but ease of getting replacement from Amazon and returning bad one to them is just amazing!!)

  5. Upgraded from the stock 160GB 5400rpm drive in my 17″ MBP. Cloned the contents of my old drive onto this one, and everything is noticeably faster, much faster. Granted my old drive was over 80% full, but this apples to apples comparison has me amazed. Also, much quieter.
